A free photograph of the Kaal Bhairav temple in Kashi was not available. These pictures show a lamp and a homa.
In Kashi, Kaal Bhairav is worshipped as the kotwal — the guardian of the city. Tradition says Shiva appointed him to watch over Kashi, and that no one stays in the city without his leave. The temple at Bisheshwarganj is an old centre of both Vedic and tantric worship.
Bhairav is also honoured as the one who directs time and the planets. Families ask for navagraha shanti here when several planets feel harsh at once, and for a kavach when the home feels exposed to fear or ill-will.
